Schellack is a natural product created by the lac bug (Kerria lacca).
The female bugs form cocons or tunnel like tubes to protect and grow up their descendants.
After harvesting and cleaning the flakes, they can be solubled in Ethanol or hospital Alcohol to make laquer.
This laquer is licensed as save food product (E904) and You can find if on Lemons and Oranges prepared to use the skin for cooking or marmelade.
You propably have eaten it on fine chocolate-and sweet products and many healthpills have a protecting Schellack skin too.
To use it as a protection for our carefully selected wood on the guitar, we use the cleaned flakes and hospital Alcohol only and put up to 20 ultrathin layers of this mix on the guitar by hand. Because each layer need drying time, this hand laquering process take about 30 days and another 14 days until the Alcohol is gone and the Schllack becomes a nice sounding and wood protecting skin of our guitars.
This is the traditional way since 200 years in use of great guitarbuilders and You can find this laquer on nearly all of the most expensive and historical guitars of this world.
Some hints for keep our traditional made guitar healthy:
1) Pls be carefully with the guitar and watch Your fingernails.
2) Heat will soften the Schellack, so pls do not leave the guitar or guitar with case in direct sunshine or inside the car during high tempratures (pls take black cars really serious)
3) Our guitars are build in clima controlled rooms with 45% of humidity, plus/minus 15% of humidity are the best conditions for a long live of each guitar.
4) Pls keep away body sweat from Your arm by using a soft garmet for protection.
5) Pls do not clean Your guitar with furniture cleaners containing Ethanol or Alcohol.
6) A refreshment of the french polish is recommendet after 2 years of playing,pls ask Your local dealer.
Our recommendation: keep Your guitar in the same environ which give Your a comfortable feeling (swimming pool not included).
