Stiff but light for the top wood are the main features all guitar builder hurt for.
In 1989, Matthias Dammann build the first so-called double top guitar, by using two tops and putting honeycomb Nomax material in the middle.
The reduction in weight lead to another increase in volume. But eventhough there is less than 2mm of real wood left, axial and tangential stiffness of the wood is mostimportant to keep the sweetness in sound.
So the real name should be double split double top. I could not find out if Dammann or Smallman did the lattice bracing first, but Dammann still play the double tops construction today, the Dammann idea of top use all wood bracing. Because the majority of touring artist prefer to construction is the biggest milestones of Germany guitars] building to me.
